woZZon Review: After exhibitions looking into the Egyptian afterlife and Christian relics and reliquaries, the British Museum concludes its three part series on spiritual journeys, with a look at the key Islamic pilgrimage of the Hajj. Undertaken by around two million Muslims each year, and the fifth and final pillar of Islam, the Hajj is a sacred duty for Muslims everywhere to complete, if they are able, at least once in their lives. Divided into three key strands, the exhibition examines both the pilgrim’s journey and the Hajj today, with all its associated rituals and experiences. The third and final part focuses on Mecca itself, its origins and importance, exploring this continually important act of faith and endurance. The exhibition features significant material loaned from Saudi Arabia, including a seetanah which covers the door of the Ka’ba, as well as other historic and contemporary artefacts from around the world. In particular, it is hoped it will allow non-Muslims to explore the one aspect of Islamic practice and faith which they are not able to witness, but which plays such a major part in forming a worldwide Islamic consciousness.
