woZZon Review: Wonderful animated feature that everyone was raving on about in 2009 and it's easy to see why. Up tells the story of a lonely old balloon salesman, Carl, who faces eviction from his beloved home that he shared with his wife Ellie before she died. They once had a dream about living in 'Paradise Falls' in South America spurred on by their hero Charles F. Muntz, an eccentric explorer, who disappered at the height of his career to find a mysterious bird. Fast forward to the present day and Carl's house is surrounded by an urban development, with his house the last one standing. He is pestered by a boy scout called Russell, who is trying to get his 'Assisting The Elderly' badge, and to get him to leave Carl in peace he gives him the task of searching for a mysterious 'snipe' that is plaguing his back garden. Carl manages to get into a foray with one of the urban developers, and after a court appearance it is suggested that he move into a retirement home. Thinking on his feet, he attaches hundreds of balloons to his house which gets lifted from its foundations so that he can begin his adventure to Paradise Falls. However, Carl has picked up an accidental passenger in Russell who manages to navigate them all the way to South America. Upon landing they bump into the fated bird that Muntz has been tracking for years, which Russell names Kevin. As the film progresses we learn that Muntz sent out a bunch of talking dogs, who communicate via their collars, to seek out Kevin. Carl and Russell meet one of the dogs called Dug who greets them in only a way that a dog can with the line "I have only just met you and I love you." Whilst the dogs featured can speak, they still remain very much doggy-like, with their fascination to balls and squirrels. Carl, who only ever wanted peace and quiet is now lumbered with Russell, Kevin and Dug, literally dragging his past behind him in the form of his house. By the end of the film Carl learns the true meaning of friendship, and a thing or two about his deceased wife. Brilliantly animated, superbly cast, and heartwarming and funny in so many places, it will turn any old Carl into a ball of mush.
